World Cup Tip Throwback
Netherlands - Argentina
Before we give our World Cup tip, we look back into World Cup history and look at a very special match.
Most legendary match 1978 World Cup final in Argentina
Argentina against the Netherlands – this duel has already taken place five times at World Cups. These two great soccer nations will now meet again in the quarter-finals of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar on Friday, 09.12.2022 at 20:00 at Lusail Stadium in Lusail. Both teams have set nothing but the World Cup title as their goal. We can certainly expect a first, really interesting quarterfinal here.
Argentina, with its absolute top star Lionel Messi, may be the slight favorite here for many, but old coach Louis van Gaal will come up with something to limit the circles of Messi & Co.
Argentina got off to anything but a good start in their sensational 2-1 loss to Saudi Arabia. After that, however, things went better for the Albiceleste in Group C. With two 2:0 victories against the Central Americans from Mexico and against Poland, the team qualified for the round of sixteen. Messi, in particular, showed in these games that he is in very good form at the moment. His dream of following in Maradona’s footsteps and lifting the World Cup trophy in the air at the end of the day continues.
Both World Cup tips in the round of 16 were correct with us
In the round of 16 they had a hard time against strong fighting Australians. In the end it was enough for a 2:1 to enter the quarterfinals. The Netherlands won 2-0 against both Senegal and hosts Qatar in the group stage in Group A. Only against the South Americans from Ecuador did the Elftal have to settle for a 1-1 draw. For many experts – and also for us as a betting shop – there is still some room for improvement with the Dutch. If they don’t play up to their potential, it could be difficult to reach the semifinals against Argentina.

View 1974
We will now first go back to the year 1974. The first meeting of the two nations was at the 1974 World Cup in Germany. In the 2nd round on June 26, 1974, the Netherlands played against Argentina in front of 56,548 spectators in the newly built Parkstadion in Gelsenkirchen.
At that time the Netherlands won against Argentina with 4:0 (2:0). The then Oranje team of coach Rinus Michels, with its many stars (including Cruyff, Krol, Haan, Neeskens and Jongbloed), was considered one of the best teams in the world. Scorers at that time: 1:0 Johan Cruyff, 2:0 Ruud Krol, 3:0 Johnny Rep, 4:0 Johan Cruyff
The mode at that time looked a lot different than the one we have today. In Germany, only 16 national teams participated in the World Cup. The game was played in 4 preliminary groups of 4 teams each. The respective first two of each group advanced to the 2nd round. The 2nd round was held with 2 groups of 4 teams each. The Netherlands won all 3 matches in the 2nd round against Argentina (4:0), Brazil (2:0) and the then GDR (2:0).
The team took first place in group A and played directly in the final against BR Germany, who won all 3 matches in group B. The legendary final in Munich’s Olympic Stadium was lost by the Netherlands with 1:2 despite oppressive superiority. The winning goal for Germany was scored by the nation’s bomber at the time, Gerd Müller. For Argentina it was the end of the line in round 2.
Here is the table of round 2 at that time:
Place | Team | Games | Goals | Points |
1 | Netherlands | 3 | 8:0 | 6:0 |
2 | Brazil | 3 | 3:3 | 4:2 |
3 | GDR | 3 | 1:4 | 1:5 |
4 | Argentina | 3 | 2:7 | 1:5 |
The next time Argentina and the Netherlands crossed paths was in the final of the 1978 World Cup in Argentina. At the time, this World Cup – like today’s World Cup in Qatar – was considered very controversial. The reason for this was the brutal military dictatorship that prevailed in Argentina at the time.
The mode was still the same as in 1974. Host Argentina, one of the tournament favorites, won Group B of the 2nd round and the Dutch won their Group A of the 2nd round. In the World Cup final on June 25, 1978, Argentina and the Netherlands met at the Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires in front of 71,483 spectators. The game was a very close and contested match. In the end, Argentina prevailed 3:1 in overtime. Argentina thus won its 1st World Cup in the Estadio Monumental cauldron. Celebrated star in the final was Argentina’s striker Mario Kempes with 2 goals.
Scorers at the time : 1:0 Mario Kempes, 1:1 Dick Nanninga, 2:1 Mario Kempes, 3:1 Daniel Bertoni
World Cup 1998 in France, 2006 in Germany and 2014 in Brazil
At the 1998 World Cup in France, they met in the quarterfinals on 04.07.1998 in Marseille. At the Stade Velodrome in front of a sell-out crowd of 55,000, the Netherlands beat Argentina 2-1 (1-1). The goals scored: 1:0 Kluivert, 1:1 Claudio Lopez, 2:1 Dennis Bergkamp,
Argentina finished the group stage as 1st in Group H with 9 points and 7:0 goals. The Netherlands also finished first in Group H (5 points, 7:2 goals). The Netherlands was eliminated in the semifinals in a penalty shootout against Brazil (2:4 i. E.)
World Cup 2006 in Germany – Group Stage Gr. C 21.06.2006 Netherlands – Argentina 0:0 (0:0) Frankfurt, Waldstadion (48.000 spectators)
Argentina’s exit from this World Cup came in the quarterfinals in a penalty shootout against Germany. Lehmann, the German goalkeeper with the note of the preferred corners of the Argentine penalty takers in his sock, was the celebrated hero in the penalty shootout. The Dutch were knocked out in the round of 16 by Portugal (with Ronaldo). This World Cup was the 1st World Cup for the young Messi.
World Cup 2014 in Brazil – Semifinals 09.07.2014 Netherlands – Argentina 2:4 i. E. (0:0) Sao Paulo, (63267 spectators) Scorers in the penalty shootout: Robben and Kuyt, Messi, Garray, Aguero and Rodriguez.

Conclusion
Three times, therefore, the two nations met in the knockout phase. While Oranje prevailed in the 1998 quarterfinals (2-1), the other two duels went to the Albiceleste. In 1978, the Argentines secured their first of 2 World Cup titles in the final against the Dutch. In 2014, the Argentines prevailed in the semifinals after a penalty shootout.
